Abstract
This study aims to understand the effects of family relationship on mental health and quality of life in residents of low-income area communities and verify whether mental health plays a mediating role in the relationship between family relationship and quality of life. 350 low-income area residents were investigated. The family relationship of low-income families was set as an independent variable; mental health, as a mediating variable; and quality of life, as a dependent variable. Socio-demographic characteristics including sex, age, and income were controlled and the mediating role of mental health was identified.
The analysis results suggested that there was a difference in major variables according to sex, age, and income and mental health had a mediating effect in the relationship between family relationship and quality of life in low-income families. Family relationship(independent variable) fully mediated quality of life(dependent variable) through mental health(mediating variable) rather than had a direct effect. Therefore, this study suggests that programs for the recovery of communication and family functions should be developed in low-income area families and case management is necessary for mental health and to meet multiple needs.
